      Hi Ursula,

      Thanks for your comment.

As yet I know nothing of the individuals listed as inmates of the prison, but prompted by your enquiry, I had a very quick look at some online records. I checked for Fred Brown here: http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure/record_office/records/prisoner_records/default.asp, but unfortunately nothing came up (despite it being a pretty common name). And in the online newspaper archive (which ends in 1913), but again found nothing that exactly matches these details (although a search of name variants may bring up something). The only Fred Brown I did find was (in Sheffield Daily Telegraph July 07, 1899) convicted in Mansfield for a month, for stealing a bunch of keys – he is recorded as from Shirebrook. The census doesn’t seem to turn up anything certain from a quick search, either – only (in 1901) an Alfred Brown, Coal Miner / ‘Odd Labourer’ born in Northants., living in the nearby Burton (Staffordshire) district at 146, High Street, Stanton and Newhall.

When I get chance (unfortunately this may not be for a while, as I’ve a few things on at the moment), I’ll see if I can find anything in the odd records I might have; if I do, I shall post it on the blog.

If you’re interested in this person, and able to do so, it might be worthwhile to visit the Derbyshire Records Office in Matlock, Derbyshire, UK (http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure/record_office/records) and see what might come up there. If you’re unable to visit, the staff can be contacted via phone or email, and will often do document searches and send the results (for a fee).

It’s interesting to hear about individuals, so if you do find out more about Fred, please let me know!

PS for Ursula: also in the 1901 census, a Charles F Brown, ‘Coal Miner Loader’, at 179, Regent Street, Church Gresley (Derby), Burton, recorded as born in Smisby, Leicestershire (quite close to Swadlincote).
